This is an ambitious family chronicle that spans three generations, adapted from biographical material from the director-writer’s own family. The film’s protagonist is a made-up character, however: Magnus is a still photographer who in the preparations for his mother’s 75th birthday stumbles upon dark family secrets hitherto unknown to him. And this family has a truly dramatic back-story, for example a child born out of wedlock who was adopted away and later disavowed by both her biological mother and half-siblings. But it is watching the protagonist’s alcoholised, half-sadistic father that hurts the most, due to the frightening ferocity brought to the role by the ever impressive Mikael Persbrandt.
